FAIR TRADE - What is Fair Trade?
Fair Trade is a different way of doing business. It's about making principles of fairness and decency mean something in the marketplace. It seeks to change the terms of trade for the products we buy - to ensure the farmers and artisans behind those products get a better deal. Most often this is understood to mean better prices for producers, but it often means longer-term and more meaningful trading relationships as well. For consumers and businesses, it's also about information. Fair Trade is a way for all of us to identify products that meet our values so we can make choices that have a positive impact on the world.
Our Mountain Gems100% Arabica coffees celebrate the richness of the coffee lands while protecting the diversity of nature. Each and every green bean used in our Mountain Gems Coffee is purchased from certfied organic sources. Approved organic certifiers at source ensure that farmers and processers adhere to the required guidelines and regulations so that their coffees can be officially sold as Organic. Organic coffee farming focuses on sustainability while using renewable resources for crop enrichment instead of, pesticides, herbacides and chemicals.
But there's more to it...before our coffees can bear the "Canada Organic" seal, we must be recognized as a certifed organic roaster. Our roastery is certified by EcoCert, an approved Canadian organic certifier. Just like the farmers, we follow a very concise set of guidelines and regulations to ensure that our rosatery here at Java Works is certified organic, which means that our Mountain Gems coffees can be officially sold as "ORGANIC" Each year, Ecocert inspects our facility to make sure that we meet and exceed the standards for organic certification. The inpection process is a transparent one that looks at all aspects of our Organic production right from the minute we receive our organic green beans to the final stages of packaging.
